Abstract

Cynthia Dowd of Richmond is suing Bath Iron Works under Portland's gay-rights ordinance, claiming the shipbuilder discriminated against her because she is a lesbian. Dowd, a former Portland resident, worked for BIW for seven years before she was fired in December of 1992. The case is the first one under the gay-rights ordinance, which was first passed by the city council in May 1992 and upheld by voters last November. Details.
