Abstract

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) today will hear arguments on whether to preserve the two-tier rate system under which the three cities in Greater Portland pay lower rates than do the towns served by the Portland Water District. The towns believe the system is unfair and they want a uniform rate. The PUC's decision will have a big impact because it will coincide with a 27.7 percent rate increase due to take effect in March. With figures showing the impact of the March rate increase under the two-tier system and under a uniform rate system.
