Abstract

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt last week announced that he would support a proposal to tax outdoor goods, optical goods and pet food to help fund state wildlife agencies. Both Democratic and Republican candidates have stated their opposition to the idea. The proposal is supported by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and its counterparts in the other 49 states, as well as the governors of ten states. L.L. Bean has reportedly lobbied against the proposal.
