Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the teacher shortage in Maine. According to Deputy Education Commissioner Judy Lucarelli, the shortage is in specialty positions like speech therapy and special education. Foreign language teachers and those with credentials in science and math are also scarce. With 65 percent of Maine's 32,000 teachers currently between the ages of 40 and 59, and only 12 percent under 30, the shortage is fast becoming a crisis. Out of 10,000 students at the University of Southern Maine, fewer than 700 are working on degrees in education. With the number of graduates in 1991, 1997, 1999 and 2001 that received a degree in education from schools in the University of Maine System that offer degrees in education. Also with steps the state is taking to resolve the problem.
