Abstract
History of the Portland Savings Bank, describing the bank's origins and growth. Includes a concise narrative about how banks operate.
Prior to the Great Fire (1866), beginning in 1852, Portland Savings Bank was at 188 Middle Street (in the Canal Bank Building, then numbered as 86 Middle Street). Post-fire, the Bank established itself at 83-89 Exchange Street, finally consolidating and relocating to 481 Congress Street in 1925.
In 1983, the bank was renamed Peoples Heritage Bank, and later Banknorth, subsequently TD Banknorth.
The contemporary TD Bank recognizes the Portland Savings Bank as its ancestor.
Portland Savings Bank presidents included John Bundy Brown (1864-1881), and James Phinney Baxter (1901-1921).
The booklet was printed by Anthoensen Press. 12pp., 3.5x6"
