Description

Article caption:

"Portland's Shanty Town. The Back Bay dump, the last frontier for pioneering Portlanders, will serve no more as a haven for jobless men, the City Council decreed Monday night. Today, Shanty Town was shrouded in gloom. Bill Powers [at left] and his wife must leave the shack for which he paid $30 last Fall. At right is the Main Stem, all of which is to be cleared away to make Marginal Way sightly for motorists."

Photo published in the Evening Express, on 3 May 1938.
