Library staff have maintained MNI from1945 to the present, initially on index cards available in a cabinet in the Portland Room at the Main Library and then, starting in 1992, in this online database known as the Maine News Index Online.
For articles from 1992 to the present, browse the publications below or search all MNI Online using the search box (upper right). To find articles published 1945-1992 in Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram, Portland Evening Express, Portland Sunday Telegram, Maine Times, Down East, and Casco Bay Weekly, please consult the card file index that is housed in the Portland Room.
MNI provides summaries of articles and citations, not full-text access. To retrieve the full text of an article:
- Microfilm: Portland Public Library has over a century’s worth of Portland newspapers, including the Portland Press Herald, the Evening Express, and the Casco Bay Weekly on microfilm. The library has two microfilm readers for your use. Copies may be printed for 25¢ a page in-house. Off-site requests for articles or obituaries are charged a fee of $5 per article to cover staff time, printing/scanning, and mailing.
- Print issues: The Portland Room holds many back issues of print periodicals which may be used in the Portland Room reading area. Periodicals are cataloged in the library catalog.
- Full-text digital copies: Articles published in the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram from September 30, 1995 to the present are accessible via Maine Newsstand, a Proquest database available to library cardholders. Articles published in the Casco Bay Weekly are freely accessible here.
