Abstract

An exploration of the impact relocating to a new country can have on the mental health of immigrants and refugees. Discusses how stressors ranging from homesickness to a lack of essential supplies can lead to anxiety and depression. Discusses how factors such as language barriers and cultural stigmas surrounding mental illness impede immigrants and refugees from seeking help. Leopold Ndayisabye, former Preble Street caseworker and former president of the Rwandan Association of Maine, gives his input on these challenges; Abusana Micky Bondo relates the personal experiences that led her to cofound In Her Presence to support immigrant women.
