Abstract

Discussion of the difficulties posed by current legislation for asylum seekers in need of work permits. Describes federal rules mandating a one hundred fifty day waiting period before an asylum seeker can receive a work permit, as well as a proposed rule which would charge asylum seekers an application fee. Describes the hardships created by such legislation as unemployed asylum seekers must depend on charity for long periods of time before being allowed to support themselves. Mentions alternative legislation proposed by Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree which would reduce the waiting period for work permits.
