Abstract

A look at the health risks -- physical and mental -- associated with loneliness. The problem is especially acute among refugees and asylum seekers whose social isolation, due to language barriers and cultural differences, may be compounded by PTSD. For older immigrants, social isolation may be even more pronounced. Several Maine organizations such as In Her Presence, Hope Acts, Southern Maine Agency on Aging, and Catholic Charities have all designed programs that encourage social mingling to help immigrant elders.

Includes advice from six women who participated in a Zoom call hosted by In Her Presence to discuss strategies for overcoming loneliness. The women report that communicating with family back in Africa, praying, volunteering, and exercising can all help.
