Abstract

Babrak and Paikar Jalali recall the events that led to their settlement in Maine, beginning on August 21, 2021, when they arrived at Kabul Airport along with a multitude of others looking to flee the Taliban. With the help of various organizations and individuals, including Maine Immigrant Refugee Services (MEIRS) and Connecting Across Cultures (CAC), the family is now settled in an apartment in Lewiston; Babrak and Paikar have jobs, and the girls attend school. The family tries to make sure they don't lose touch with their origins and with family back in Afghanistan.
