Abstract

Profile of Julia Hazel, winner of a 2023 Black Excellence award for her work in education and community engagement. When Hazel moved to Maine in 2012 and began teaching here, she was often the only teacher of color. With a fellow teacher, Fiona Hopper, she helped create a course for teachers to give them tools to address issues of racism. She also authored the report, Educator of Color, and was appointed director of BIPOC Career Pathways and Leadership at Portland Public Schools in 2021.
