Abstract

Brief history of claims of voter fraud against Black voters in Portland, going back to the 1830s. Looks specifically at the election of 1832, when the National Republicans claimed a narrow victory, prompting cries of fraud from the Democratic Party (which, at the time, was pro-slavery and opposed to Black suffrage), which declared that Black voters had been bribed with promises of support for the Abyssinian Church and positions in state government. The 1840 election also prompted similar outcries after Democrat Albert C. Smith lost to William Pitt Fessenden.
