Abstract

A description of the second Civic and Community Engagement Fellowship in Portland. Begun by Portland City Councilor Pious Ali in 2020 and affiliated with Portland Empowered, an education nonprofit, the Fellowship aims to connect Maine high school graduates from non-white and immigrant families with each other, and with speakers from similar backgrounds. The article relates the genesis of the Fellowship, how it helps its participants navigate a higher education system or work culture which may be alien to them, and the goals of some of the current members, such as Amran Osman, who is launching Generational Noor, a nonprofit which will address the opioid crisis, particularly in the immigrant community.
