Abstract

Profile of Martin Sungoyo, owner, founder, and CEO of New England Interpreter's Service in Portland. Sungoyo fled the Sudan in 2000 and came to Portland. Shortly after his arrival in Maine, Catholic Charities hired him as an interpreter, as he knew Arabic, Azande, Lingala and English. He opened his own interpreting business in 2005, and today can provide services in eighteen different languages, with sixty-four on-call interpreters. Sungoyo also shares some funny moments from his early years which included having misunderstanding the banking system in the U.S. and some language challenges.
