Abstract

An overview of refugee resettlement programs in Maine. The article gives statistics for the past few years and looks at how the pandemic and the influx of Afghan evacuees has meant that refugee admissions for FY 2022 will not meet the cap set by President Biden. The piece also offers a brief look at the challenges that refugees in Maine face. Finding affordable housing is one of the most pressing needs in the state. Includes personal account of an Afghan refugee and a Somali woman who was raised in a refugee camp in Kenya.
