Abstract

Math teacher Hermenegildo Paulo realized that many of the lessons in the math textbooks used at King Middle School use cultural scenarios that are unfamiliar to many of his students, approximately one third of whom are from African cultures. So he started to devise his own examples, which included an exercise that involved making fufu, or funge, a popular dough-like food. The students had to use math skills to determine quantities of flour and budget calculations to determine the cost of ingredients. Paulo taught math in Angola for 12 years; he has been working at King Middle School since 2018.
