Abstract
Deering Oaks was the gay cruising spot in Portland until 1990, when police stepped up enforcement of various city laws and drove many potential cruisers into the nearby Western Promenade area. West End residents began complaining, and authorities cracked down, but after a brief interlude the cruising scene moved back to the West End. The Portland City Council in March approved a new anti-cruising ordinance that calls for no-cruising signs in designated areas and fines of up to $500 for a third offense. Bruce Balboni, editor at the Community Pride Reporter, says the assault on gay cruising is part of a cultural war, and that Deering Oaks should be reopened to gay cruising. Details.
