Abstract
"Talk" piece with Shirley Friend, a regular at Whit's End on Congress Street in Portland. Friend, one of 17 children, had eight children of her own, and adopted 27 more. She narrowly escaped arrest in 1963 after a batch of bootlegged beer exploded in her Park Street apartment.
