Abstract

"City" piece on welfare benefits for legal immigrants. The Maine Legislature during the special session voted to end welfare and Medicaid for legal immigrants after April 1, 1997. Gov. King has offered to pay for the benefits out of his emergency supplemental budget, which runs out June 30. Pro-welfare legislators argue that legal immigrants deserve benefits, and that cutting benefits at the state level will shift the burden to municipalities.
