Abstract
Employment in manufacturing in New England declined 11.6 percent between 1990 and 1992, compared to a nationwide decline of 5.6 percent for the same period. Cumberland County has lost an estimated 2,500 manufacturing jobs since 1982, prompting the city of Portland to create the Industry and Commerce Plan Advisory Committee to study the problem of the disappearing manufacturing base. Three Portland food-processing plants, Barber Foods, Burnham & Morrill and the John J. Nissen Baking Co., were visited to assess the health of manufacturing in the city. Details.
