Abstract
"City" piece on Roland's, Portland's first openly gay bar. When it opened 30 years ago, the city would not grant it a dancing license, but it was the only safe haven for gay people, who were often targeted by vandalism and violence. It was the only legitimate venue for gay people to be comfortable. A drunken patron burned it to the ground in 1981. Related "Nocturnal Emissions" column on current gay club Millenium.
