Abstract
Feature article on the proposed widening of the Maine Turnpike between York and Scarborough. There is a two-to-one margin of support among Maine voters for widening the road, but a survey released in May by the Natural Resources Council of Maine indicated 52 percent of respondents thought other roads and bridges should be repaired first. The group opposed to widening includes the remains of the coalition that won passage of the 1991 Maine Sensible Transportation Act, while the pro-widening group includes public safety workers, big business, big government and others.
