Abstract

"City" piece on the Arnie Hanson Center on India Street in Portland, the city's only shelter for alcoholics. Portland Mayor George Campbell is calling for an immediate investigation of the shelter, based on allegations from former and current employees of client abuse, managerial apathy, incompetent staffing and other charges. The city suspended funding for the center in September and October because Catholic Charities of Maine, which operates the center, failed to report the required client information.
