Abstract
Former Maine Gov. Ken Curtis, former Portland city managerJohn Menario and former Bath Iron Works CEO Buzz Fitzgerald have come forward as a team seeking to develop the Portland site currently occupied by BIW. Portland city manager RoBert Ganley says the three met with city officials in 1997 to discuss ways to persuade General Dynamics, owner of BIW, to purchase the land from the city, then sell the site so it can be developed into a waterfront hotel and convention center. Ganley said if the city tries to develop the property, public wrangling over waterfront issues could postpone significant reuse of the land indefinitely. Waterfront activists say an upscale complex would be detrimental to the working waterfront. Details; related article on the economics of operating a convention center in Portland.
