Abstract
Bath Iron Works is hoping that the federal government will finance loans that will enable other countries to purchase products from U.S. defense contractors, and would like the money for the program to come out of economic conversion funds. U.S. represenative Tom Andrews, D-Maine, says that exporting arms overseas doesn't count as defense conversion, and wants to keep the proposed program from becoming reality. Andrews and arms control activists say that increasing arms exports will ruin the potential of the so-called peace dividend. Details, related articles.
