Abstract
A look at night life options for the underaged in Portland, with interviews of patrons at Metropolis' Friday night non-alcoholic dance party and at Denny's all-night restaurant. Despite a recent slaying in Denny's parking lot, which began at the Metropolis, an examination of police calls shows that the club is no more prone to violence and rowdiness than bars where adults gather. The Metropolis maintains strict rules, forbidding people to leave and come back in, turning away anyone who looks 21 or older, denying entrance to anyone wearing gang colors or insignia, and posting bouncers around the club. Despite rules against alcohol, young patrons at the Metropolis seemed to be able to smoke with impunity. With related editorial.
