Abstract
Maine Department of Public Safety statistics show that domestic assaults in the state increased more than 16 percent in 1992, while Cumberland County reports indicate a 27 percent increase over last year, to 1,149 incidents. Some women face continued harassment even after they leave their husbands, particularly if the husband has visitation rights with children. The proposed Post-Separation Family Relief Act, sponsored by state representative Mary Cathcart, D-Orono, would prohibit a parent with a history of abuse from gaining shared custody. Details.
