Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Maine's new Clean Election Act, which Al Diamon says is dauntingly complex. Although the Legislature is expected vote to appropriate the funds necessary to implement the act, only 16 percent of Maine taxpayers used the check-off on the state income tax form to contribute three dollars to the campaign fund, even though the donation doesn't increase the amount of taxes they owe, and despite an ad campaign urging that they do so.
