Abstract
The D. L. Geary Brewing Co. in Portland was told by a Maine Times salesperson that it had won the annual readers' poll for best microbrewery. In the paper's "Best of Maine" edition on July 16, however, the Sea Dog Brewing Co. in Bangor won the top spot. The associate publisher, Linda Monko, said the paper intended to have a winner for three geographical areas, but without enough response, had to choose one winner for the whole state. Geary's maintains they lost because they failed to buy ad space. The Star Fish Grill in Brunswick, which opened eight days before the end of the balloting, and whose lead cook is Monko's son, Levi Monko, won the "best new restaurant" category and a spot on the cover.
