Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece examining Republican state senator Joel Abromson's position in regard to the tobacco industry, from which he accepted $550 in campaign funds, more than was accepted by any other state senator. Abromson might vote against Portland's ordinance to ban smoking in restaurants, but he has only voted with tobacco interests 38 percent of the time, making him "less than a bargain." The three credit card companies with operations in Maine: MBNA American Bank, KeyCorp, and Fleet Financial Group, are among the industry's biggest contributors to federal campaigns. Details.
