Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Gov. Angus King's reversal of a previous position not to increase the gas tax. Now he is seriously considering it because of a projected shortfall of $55 million for the Maine Department of Transportation. During the recession of the 1990s, the department routinely spent money it didn't have, which the state is still paying for on a ten-year bail-out plan.
