Abstract
"City" piece on the Maine Time Dollar Network (MTDN). Auta Main, MTDN's director, claims program participants don't have to pay state and federal income tax on services they receive through bartering. But the Internal Revenue Service and the Maine Revenue Service disagree. The bartering network was started in 1996 with a $100,000 grant from Falmouth philanthropist Dr. Richard Rockefeller. MTDN operates on an annual budget of $75,000, which it receives from two private foundations.
