Abstract
"Edge" piece on the renaissance of Portland's Longfellow Square. During the last few years the square has been transformed from a neglected wedge of commercial property to an animated slice of downtown Portland. Portland Performing Arts has had a big effect on the area. Its building dominates the square, though the performance center won't officially open until March. City officials are studying changes for the architecture of the square itself. They're considering adding antique-style streetlights, and might even reconfigure the sidewalks. Kathleen Brown, Portland's director of economic development, expects continued investment in the area.
