Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Maine's ultra-conservatives such as Jon Reisman, unsuccessful congressional candidate and new chairman of Keep Maine Free; state representative Tom Shields of Auburn, who wants to mandate English as Maine's official language; and state representative Douglas Ahearne of Madawaska, who successfully promoted a legislative bill in 1997 that prohibits ordering beer and wine by mail, and an unsuccessful campaign this year to make the purchase of beer and wine through either the postal service or cyberspace a felony.
