Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on "An Act to Establish the Maine Communities in the New Century Program," which is a bill now being considered by the Legislature that would provide up to $3,645,000 for each of the next two years for historic preservation, library renovation and programs in arts and humanities. A New England Foundation for the Arts study estimated that in 1996, the arts made an economic impact in Maine of $146 million, nearly 6,000 Maine people were employed in the arts and nearly seven million attended cultural events in the state. The bill's lead sponsor is House Speaker Steve Rowe of Portland. Co-sponsors include former Speaker John Martin of Eagle Lake, Senate President Mark Lawrence of Kittery and Senate Majority Leader Chellie Pingree of North Haven.
