Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on various situations experienced by employees in Maine's retail stores. According to the Maine Department of Labor, there were 113,146 people employed statewide in the retail industry during 1997. This was exceeded that year only by the service industry, with 138,091 employees. At $284, the retail workers had the lowest average weekly earning, while the highest average salary, $663, went to people in finance, insurance and real estate. The author worked at the Bookland branch located in Portland's Monument Square.
