Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the new sports arena being proposed for Portland and some of the city's past blockbuster schemes and zany projects, most of which fortunately failed to get off the drawing board. Proposed projects included various treatments of the Back Cove area for recreational and commercial use, including a land-sea air transportation terminal; highway construction plans that were never realized or, like the Franklin Arterial, unfortunately were realized; skyscrapers like the DMR Group's One Lincoln Square; a host of condominiums that were never built or, like Chandlers Wharf, unfortunately were built; a tunnel under the Fore River to replace the Million Dollar Bridge; a very high fixed bridge over the Fore River to replace the Million Dollar Bridge; plans to turn Fort Gorges into an amusement park or a restaurant; and a plan to turn Peaks Island into an international vacation and recreation center for foreign correspondents who cover the United Nations.
