Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on the defeat of Question 1 on the Nov. 2 statewide referendum ballot, which proposed a ban on "partial-birth" abortions in Maine. The Christian Coalition, the Christian Civic League of Maine and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland raised lots of money, organized a massive get-out-the-vote effort and aired television spots that even opponents said were effective, but still lost, and has now weakened their bargaining power.
