Abstract
"City" piece on Portland's school superintendent, Mary Jane McCalmon, who kept a January investigation of the city's schools by the Maine Department of Labor a secret from most school committee members and the public. On Jan. 10, three days after the discovery of a hazardous chemical at Deering High School, the labor department notified McCalmon it would conduct a review of workplace safety throughout Portland's schools. That inspection uncovered 71 violations and resulted in the school department's being fined $3,000. But some school committee members say they didn't even know the city's schools were being inspected.
