Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Maine's 1st District Democratic Congressman Tom Allen and his Republican challenger Jane Amero, who are both campaigning as moderates. According to the author, that means they're both pretending to be something they are not. Since Amero was a state senator and Allen is in the U.S. House of Representatives, a direct comparison of voting records is impossible. But voting trends are still clear. With comments by political observers, and approval ratings by such groups as the Maine AFL-CIO, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Maine League of Conservation Voters, Maine Education Association, Children's Defense Fund and many others.
