Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on a proposal by state represenative Chris Muse, D-South Portland, that would outlaw elephants at circuses in Maine. Several U.S. municipalities, Canadian provinces and European nations have outlawed or strictly regulated elephant acts because standard methods of training and restraining the animals are considered abusive and cruel treatment according to Maine Friends of Animals and other animal advocacy groups.
