Abstract
"City" piece on David Town, an alcoholic who died in Portland's Deering Oaks Park on Oct. 20, and the controversial notion of involuntarily committing chronic alcoholics for their own safety and the safety of others. Representatives from the Portland Police Department, Milestone, Preble Street Resource Center, the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office and other parties met in October to discuss ways to address the issue, and the cost factor was a major part of the discussion. Another meeting is scheduled for November.
