Abstract

"City" piece on a legislative bill sponsored by Rep. Ben Dudley of Portland that would allow students to sue their schools if they have been harassed, verbally or physically, and believe the school should have been able to prevent it. Dudley said his goal is to prod schools to be more proactive in addressing harassment, employing such methods as the Civil Rights Team Project, sponsored by the attorney general's office. Currently, 154 Maine schools participate in the project. The bill has been referred to the Legislature's Judiciary Committee for consideration.
