Abstract

"Edge" piece on several legislative bills that have been introduced in the Maine Legislature that would ban elephant displays and rides in the state, require elephants be checked regularly by veterinarians, and require better record keeping on the part of circuses and other shows that own elephants. With special focus on attempts by local activists to determine how humanely elephants in the Kora Shrine Circus, which was in Portland last week, are being treated.
