Abstract
Recent prison sentences handed out to Maine women convicted of killing their children point out the disparities between sentences given to women and those given to men convicted of the same offense. Pam Elliot of Westbrook received a 5-year sentence for the manslaughter of her newborn, while Sherrie Cotton received four years for manslaughter and aggravated assault in connection with the death of her 2-month-old son. Rocky Crowley, the father of Cotton's son, was sentenced to eight years after being convicted of aggravated assault. Details.
