Abstract
"City" piece on Pallotta Teamworks, a Los Angeles-based, for-profit fundraising company that organizes bicycle rides to benefit AIDS and breast cancer research. Between 1994 and 2000, the company said it collected almost $256 million in donations. But the charities in whose names it collected the money received less than $154 million, or about 60 percent of the proceeds. On Sept. 9, an estimated 2,500 bicycle riders will arrive in Portland after completing a four-day ride from Montreal to raise money for AIDS vaccine research.
