Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on a U.S. News and World Report college ranking published Sept. 1, 2000, which ranked the University of Southern Maine (USM) as a "tier 3" regional school. The report divided colleges into four categories from "top" to "tier 4." According to the magazine, USM's faults include doing a mediocre job in retaining freshmen, having a less-than-stellar graduation rate, accepting a relatively low percentage of students who graduated in the top quarter of their high school classes, and its lackluster fundraising among alumni. With special focus on public and private funding.
