Abstract
"City" piece on Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland, which has taken steps to deal with the problem of theft from patients. Wayne Clark, public information director at MMC, refused to say how many complaints have been filed in the last year, but pointed out that there is a long line of custody before a person gets to the hospital and, in many cases, property disappears prior to a patient's arrival at the emergency room. But Martha Davoli, public information manager for the hospital, said new procedures have been implemented in patients areas, including special boxes that can be opened only with the same keys used by doctors and nurses for the secure drug ordering system. With special focus on a claim by Shane Poppas that $400 was stolen from him while he was being treated at MMC for an accidental drug overdose earlier this year.
