Abstract

When the state offered $1 million in educational technology grants this year, 109 Maine school districts applied. Twelve schools were awarded approximately $75,000 apieace, while the other 97 received nothing. Some school systems are taking the intiative to hook their students up to computers and the Internet, while others don't have the funding. The growing gulf between information-poor schools and those with access to the resources has some observers noting that the state is encouraging a two-tiered system, in which some schools have great computer networks while others are left wanting.
